John Phillip Wilkerson Jr. MD is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Longwood College and completed his medical school at the Medical College of Virginia.
Dr. Wilkerson furthered his training with an internship in General Surgery and a General Orthopaedics residency at Virginia Commonwealth University – Medical College of Virginia. Between completion of his internship and starting the orthopaedic surgery residency, he completed postgraduate training in Orthopaedic Biomechanics at the same institution. During this academic research fellowship, Dr. Wilkerson completed several scientific research projects in both ankle and knee joint mechanics, post-traumatic osteoarthritis and cartilage restoration surgery. During his orthopaedic residency Dr. Wilkerson also completed additional biomechanics research in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery and clinical research in shoulder adhesive capsulitis. This research has been presented at several conferences including the Southern Orthopaedic Association. This research was also published in the journal, Orthopaedics.
