John Phillip Wilkerson Jr. MD

John Phillip Wilkerson Jr. MD is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Longwood College and completed his medical school at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Wilkerson furthered his training with an internship in General Surgery and a General Orthopaedics residency at Virginia Commonwealth University – Medical College of Virginia. Between completion of his internship and starting the orthopaedic surgery residency, he completed postgraduate training in Orthopaedic Biomechanics at the same institution. During this academic research fellowship, Dr. Wilkerson completed several scientific research projects in both ankle and knee joint mechanics, post-traumatic osteoarthritis and cartilage restoration surgery. During his orthopaedic residency Dr. Wilkerson also completed additional biomechanics research in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery and clinical research in shoulder adhesive capsulitis. This research has been presented at several conferences including the Southern Orthopaedic Association. This research was also published in the journal, Orthopaedics.

Additionally, Dr. Wilkerson completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Miami, where he worked closely with the 2001 National Champion, University of Miami Hurricanes football team serving as assistant Team Physician. Also during this year of additional surgical training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, he completed clinical research in arthroscopic shoulder surgery. This research has been presented at orthopaedic conferences, well referenced in the orthopaedic literature, and published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Dr. Wilkerson has Two Decades experience in sports medicine, total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, trauma surgery, and regenerative medicine with a focus on injuries to the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle. He has continued his professional development and refined his surgical techniques through collaboration with leading orthopaedic industry companies that focus on arthroscopy and related minimally invasive surgical techniques and products.

Dr. Wilkerson’s practice includes a physical therapy and human performance center staffed by certified physical therapists and athletic trainers. These specialists collaborate closely with him to rehabilitate injured orthopaedic patients and assist with post-surgical rehabilitation protocols. He is dedicated to providing personalized treatment plans precisely tailored to individual conditions, aiming for a speedy recovery and helping patients achieve their work or recreational goals.

As orthopaedics has continued to evolve so has his approach to applying the most minimally invasive yet highly effective evidence based treatments including office based treatments using a nano-scope also known as a needle arthroscopy procedure. Dr. Wilkerson is one of the first physicians to utilise this safe and effective treatment to diagnose intra-articular injuries, evaluate and treat pathology, and combine with highly effective regenerative medicine therapies for exact placement of natural biologics including PRP, exosomes, and autologous stem cells directly at the site of injury. These procedures are done under local anesthesia and do not require general anesthesia. Currently Dr. Wilkerson is expanding his medical practice with an international team of experts and is now utilising a validated method for harvesting and isolating bone marrow aspirate stem cells for use in regenerative orthopedic treatments.
